| The Chalk Box Kid is an early leveled narrative chapter book about a boy who creates a beautiful secret place in an old burned down chalk factory behind his new home. His art becomes his daily place of rest and creativity away from his Uncle and school problems. The ending is unexpected and inspiring for any artist or creative shy person who can be misunderstood and picked on. The story provided discussions of bullying, lying, pretending, bragging, low self confidence & the simple unexpected act of kindness & generosity. As we read along, the boys were very focussed responding with audible groans, claps and understanding. We began developing character maps with traits and filling out the GO chart with key details together. I knew I found a book that struck a chord with them. Gregory's chalk garden is finally shown at the end of the story & impressed the boys. We looked carefully at the details and I made the connection that is how detail our drawings in our science journals will be. The children were finally asked to respond to the book with their own detailed Chalk drawings of their gardens. A writing lesson will follow. |
