After reading A Turkey for Thanksgiving aloud, building our GO chart, working on some comprehension worksheets , we read and acted out the book using a reader's theatre script. The book has an unexpected ending which is fun to discover for the first time and fun to act out. This is quite the group of actors! They love reader's theatre. With a dramatic flare , I waved my magic wand and POOF all the students became turkeys. I then informed them that I LOVE to eat turkey for Thanksgiving. Being a very dramatic teacher and as I licked my lips looking hungrily at my class, I explained it was now their job to write a persuasive paper and convince me to eat something else. This was a levelled writing assignment that involved brainstorming a food they thought I would like & that they knew enough about to give me three good reasons to change my mind. ( Can Ms. Rice be a flexible thinker and change my mind? This is the very same concepts we are working on Pirate club HERE) Once they went through the writer's workshop process they produced a final draft & were required to make a puppet pal movie using their writing. I had also made a puppet pal movie to demonstrate what needed to be included ( setting, characters and a response from me indicating if they had changed my mind). They were very eager to make theirs & had fun making the movies using me as their puppet. After many giggles, fun and a great deal of work they did manage to persuade me to eat a varity of other foods. There were many relieved turkeys in room 15 this week! Enjoy their movies! E.M.
