This week's read aloud book is 7 x 9 = Trouble. I picked this book because it is about a boy struggling to learn his multiplication tables and we are studying the relationship between addition and multiplication in math. As I read aloud, the children listen and some hold a 'fidget' which helps them attend. As I ask questions and facilitate a discussion, I also teach simple 'tricks' that no one seemed to teach Wilson as he worked with great effort to memorize his tables. It is an adorable book and I can weave in math, Pirate Club ( Gassman, Worry Wall etc. make an appearance) , SEL concepts of kindness, effort, self talk and mindset. Wilson says I CAN"T often! Weave him some helpful tips. This book was excellent for a focus on character traits as well. The children watch and help fill out the G.O. chart with Scaredy's help. You see he didn't know what multiplication was so asked the children to tell them before we started the book. It was a great way for me and Scaredy to determine what needed review and where to start! After each read aloud period, the children do a quick response in their response journals. They may use the GO chart or book as a resource. | |
