The Fairy Tale genre full of heroes, magic, good vs evil, dragons etc. have a certain appeal to these boys. So, I began the unit by reading aloud the 1st book in a series titled Elmer's Dragon then moved into the classic Jack and the Beanstalk. We then compared Jack's story to Kate and the Beanstalk using a venn diagram and filling out a grid. As a class, we completed a large grid ( not shown) which they also completed on their own personal similar graph after each fairy. The grid helps us determine if the stories meet the genre's 'formula' . A fairy tale should have a 'fancy' start, happy ending, good vs evil, magic, a 3 or 7 and a magical setting. So far all the books we have read are fairy tales. Once the whole class compared the two beanstalk books with me on a large venn chart, they were split into grade level teams and did the same with their beanstalk book comparing it to the original I read. First, each group picked someone to read aloud their fairy tale, then as a group they completed their own venn diagram comparing their book to the first book we read. ( jack 1 vs Jack 2) . Finally , a presenter was chosen who practiced and then shared their poster to the class. | |
