I began reading aloud a book from the Mystery Genre this month. I slowly built this GO chart with pictures, moveable flaps, sketches etc as we finished each chapter. The children used this visual as a resource for their daily written responses to a prompt in their reading response journals. They enjoyed this book and were very motivated to respond to the daily prompts that focussed on comprehension of the story. We ended this book with a retelling that included a beginning , middle and end. We used a familiar 3 flap foldable for their notebook. This time, I had them cut out & sequence three pictures from the book. They were then asked to write under each picture flap. This is a nice way to organize their thinking and prepare them to independently write their own narrative stories which will include a beginning, middle and end . Several children were talking about this mystery during class time. So, if your child is asking for Nate the Great books this may be why! |
