After finishing Nate the Great's Halloween Hunt, we begin our reader's theatre activities for a cute book titled The Big Pumpkin. This book has an excellent social thinking theme as well. Teamwork, following a group plan etc. First, the book was read aloud to the class . This is also a song so we watched and sang along. Several times. Next, we sequenced and wrote about this story in our reader's response notebooks this week. Next week we will be acting it out using our reader theatre's script. We have already begun practicing! They are using their voices and demonstrating excellent inflection and fluency while having fun! What is Reader's Theatre? The children are assigned (or pick roles) from a pre written script. We practice and practice reading the script as a whole group out loud taking turns reading our lines as they come up. This a fun reading method that blends students' desire to perform while practicing their need for more oral reading and fluency practice. Reader's Theater offers an entertaining and engaging means of improving fluency and enhancing comprehension. They love this and it is now our 2nd reader's theatre of the year. They are very excited and enjoy using their voices and actions during this reading time. | |
