Vocabulary, vocabulary and more vocabulary terms. Geometry is full of them!
We start this math unit with the book The Greedy Triangle , several songs, a Simon Says game and tooth picks to learn basic concepts and terms. So far, we have read along and sang the following songs.
Pentahexaoctanonadeca Geometry! ( a mouthful uh?) by Bad Wolf Press. (This is ta song in our 10 minute Mini Polygon Musical play by Bad Wolf Press.) The Triangle Song ( You Tube video too!) By Rockin' Standards
After reading the Greedy Triangle we completed a grid that kept track of sides, angles and vertices before making the shapes from the book with tooth picks and clay. The children quickly realized after labeling their shapes that the number of angles, vertices and lines were the same.
Using the same pattern blocks that were used in the iPad app, the children were asked to create a picture, trace and color it.
Once completed they were asked to add/multiply the block's fractional value ( 1/2, 1/3, 1/6 ) to find the total number used for each block. Once that was completed they were asked to determine how many 'wholes' they had when they combined their like blocks. The yellow block was our whole as it was in the app.
They then had to prove their math by making all of their wholes with their blocks and check their math efforts.
They had to work hard on this multi step project !
