We worked hard on division, moved to fractions and have added decimals. This activity shows how they are related. and is not just random math concepts we must to learn.
So, I gave them a one hundreds chart and told them to create any design they wanted. I then had them write their fractions based on these 100 squares. The next day, I handed out another hundreds chart where they were asked to put their colors together in groups.
I talked about how even though both hundreds chart design looks different, there is still an equal amount of each color.
This was an excellent lesson to use whole group in my multi grade class. The younger children used fewer colors.
Next week we will be doing some more math and comparisons with these charts.
