Today the younger students and I reviewed the T.H.I.N.K. strategy for mindfully talking. ( here for the initial lesson). This is a difficult concept and behavior to bring awareness to for this group and many adults! I picked My Mouth is a Volcano to read aloud to the boys and explained what the author meant by Erupting ( blurting out). This book ..' takes an empathetic approach to the habit of interrupting and teaches children a witty technique to capture their rambunctious thoughts and words for expression at an appropriate time. Told from Louis’ perspective, this story provides parents, teachers, and counselors with an entertaining way to teach children the value of respecting others by listening and waiting for their turn to speak.' At the end the author adds a strategy to take a breath before speaking. As a small group we added a few more of our mindful tools we have been learning as well. | We talked about how words can hurt written or spoken or how they can make us feel happy. We rolled play a few scenarios and noticed also that when we talk kindly or use the THINK strategy we feel happier too. We then sorted the THINK it or Say it cards with discussion about why they put their cards in each category. The lesson ended with the children working on the next page in their digital Mindful book about mindful communication. |
