We can be mindful of many experiences and eating is yet another activity I teach directly. We started out by my reading aloud a book titled, No Ordinary Apple. This story is about a boy who wants some candy and is given an 'ordinary' apple and is disappointed. But once he is ' encouraged to carefully look, feel, smell, taste, and even listen to the apple, he discovers that this apple is not ordinary at all.' I then passed out apples followed by a few pop rock candy. The children were excited to pay careful attention to their experience eating these two items. With each item we quietly & carefully looked , touched, smelled & listened before putting the food on our tongue. As they chewed slowly and attentively swallowed, the children noticed many sensations along the way. They shared what they noticed and asked interesting questions. Some were surprised to notice saliva for example and became curious. We then discussed the two different experiences. It was a general consensus that the apple was sweeter but not as fun. This was followed by a journal entry in their mindful books. | |

This year we developed a consistent daily listening and breathing practice. I decided to bring out the Emwaves which the students were very excited to try again. They have already been able to sit for 4 minutes with many going green during the quiet period. Many are sharing interesting insight and body awareness after each session.
