We begin our study of problem solving by understanding and identifying that problems come in various sizes and require various levels of support. Room 15's categories are solving it our self ( small problem), needed a little bit of help by maybe one or two adults or needing help from emergency crews, hospitals, fire trucks etc ( Big Problems). In this lesson, the children were asked to sort problems given to them into one of the three categories. At first Scaredy Squirrel sorted the problems but he put them ALL in the BIG category - even ones like broken pencil, lost pencil box and loud music! Scaredy Squirrel as we are learning is afraid of everything and plays dead or hides whenever he thinks there is a problem even a tiny one! The kids told him they could sort it for him and not all problems were BIG ones. And they did. Next, the children were asked to fill out their own problem worksheet and share their answers. A smaller version of this will be placed at our quiet island . We will soon be learning about a famous unthinkable - Glassman- who like Scaredy Squirrel, has BIG reactions to small problems! |
