Mean Jean is another Unthinkable who does not think about how her words or actions makes someone feel. She may say hurtful things. Mean Jean may even make a person take something from someone else, yell at someone, and insist that things always go that person's way. Some would call her a bully. After a brief review of the difference between a Bully and a Buddy, a lesson taught earlier (here) and the Think it or Say it lesson (here), I read Simon's Hook to the class. Bully vs Buddy and Think it or Say it are concepts and terms we use as prompts and reminders when a social problem or interaction occurs at school. Simon's Hook provides some concrete strategies to use if being teased or bullied by another. | I made a large flap chart and as I read the book aloud, I exposed one strategy at a time from the book . I then passed out situations /phrases and the students decided what strategy applied. The following day the children performed a role play and had to use the chart to determine what strategy would be appropriate to use. In their small groups the children then cut and sorted phrases and situations into the same 5 strategies from the large chart. The chart remains up as a visual reminder. |
