Inferencing and making smart guesses using clues and social cues to 'read ' a situation is an important skill. This ability impacts in reading comprehension, interpeting a picture or illustration and our behavrior in social situations. It is an important skill we need to practice. In social situations what are the important clues or cues to attend? What is the context the situaion is occuring? If you have a friend file ( here, here ), can you make a smart quess on what is going on in the picture or situation using what you know about the person? ( In our case puppets. ) This language and practice to use clues or social cues & people or friend files is an ongoing focus in our class especially during daily read alouds, on the playground and during our Pirate Club classes. This year, I decided to use our puppets and put them in some situations the children had to look at very closely, discuss & then write down and share their ideas abou twhat was going on in each scenario. They all eagerly walked into the room each day because the scenarios changed every morning! Even the teachers were surprised! The children talked, spectulated and were excited to figure out and explain what Tomten was doing to help Scaredy Squirrel. | Our Puppet Files have grown as we read & listened to stories about them. This helped us make smart guesses and inferences this week.
