Our next Unthinkable is one of the more prevalent Unthinkables for my students. He works with many other Unthinkables which increases his power. He enjoys and is strengthened by all the distractions in today's world vying for our attention. We like to call him by his nickname the "Distractor." To learn more about this character we needed some extra support and fun, so Ned and our new Lego Pals joined us. Defeating Braineater & his cohort of friends takes daily practice so we must learn how to exercise our attention muscle , learn how the brain works and increase our self awareness & regulation . In order to set the stage for Brain Eater, we also began the school year (and continue to practice daily) aiming our attention on a single sound- our class bell. This is discussed more under the Mindful Moments tab. Our Lego Pals will also be used to help learn the many SEL concepts and integrated into other acaemdic areas such as writing. Each child picked a lego mini figure, built it and named it. They were very excited. So this first brain eater post is about our lego pals . Ms. Pehlam (SLP) and I team teach and plan our lessons collaboratively. We started started our Brain Eater unit by introducing the students to what a distractor was by watching a simple brain eater power point followed by practicing keeping our bodies and brains in our small teacher facilitated group games. We placed a picture of the brain with our Lego Pals sitting on them. If one of us noticed a child's brain or body out of the group we gently removed the pal by name off the brain. If the child returned to the group,) which they all did) the pal was placed with a compliment for returning to our game and defeating brain eater. | Building the Lego Pals Keeping our bodies and brains in the group |
