Rock Brain and his BFF Glassman are our next Unthinkables. These two keep us rigid ( Rock Brain) and have BIG reactions to small problems or change ( Glassman ).
The Perfection game is what one group is playing during rotations. The teacher is having the kids notice what is more comfortable- seeing the timer or not. The stress of racing, the noise, anticipation and feelings are discussed.
To kick off these Unthinkables
all the children watched the Escalator Problem (several times). They giggled and understood that Rock Brain was in the video but found it hard to articulate how the people were defeated by Rock Brain. They focussed on the problem of the escalator. See if you can spot the rock brain thinking and a different way the people could have solved their unexpected problem.
In my group the children are creating their own Escalator type problem that shows the rigid reaction vs the Flexible one. They have a choice of a few iPad apps. Movies coming soon!
Welcome to my Classroom!
I am passionate, a little bit quirky ( some may say a little bit more) and dedicated to serving children with Autism. These young people have touched me deeply and have made me a better teacher & hopefully person. I want to share what I have learned that allows these beautiful children to grow & sometimes thrive in my class.
I begin my 26th year of teaching this year! I teach in the Bay Area and live in the beautiful redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains. My sanctuary, place of reflection and daily sitting practice.
My hope is that this website/blog will help others understand and see children with Autism as talented unique thinkers who can and will contribute to our world and anyone who knows them in positive ways.
