During our pumpkin math unit ( here), we included a few science activities. Day 1 we asked would our pumpkins sink or float? Once it was determined they would all float, I asked the question, will the different weights of the pumpkins make a difference on the water level? The results were surprising and led to questions and puzzling out why the 10 lb pumpkin raised the water level higher than the 13 lb pumpkin. A brief discussion about the idea that mass did not always equal weight was touched on. We talked about sail boats and ocean liners. They decided the air was different inside each pumpkin. A few children left wondering about this topic wanting to explore it more at home. A MINI PUMPKIN? We all tried to see what would happen with one of our mini pumpkins... |
