As we are finishing our weather reports we move into the workings of the earth to its core! They are excited. Rocks and these boys is a sure winner. They have been bringing in rocks knowing we were moving into this topic for about two weeks now. I have quite the pile. So, today we 'officially. started by watching two short Billy Nye videos and reading a text about Erosions and Weathering. All day I had placed two categories of rocks at the back table . The children were now asked to select a rock from each pile and take a magnifying glass to determine how they were the same and different. We then compared the two types of rocks and noticed some were very smooth while others were chipped, jagged and rough etc. They looked at size, texture etc. All used the magnifying glass and some tapped, smelled and one even licked the rock. ( I did ask them to use all their senses to notice the properties of their rocks. ) | I then brought out the EROSION MACHINE! ... Ok a rock polisher but SHHHHH. We talked about how long the weathering and erosion process takes and how our Erosion Machine speeds up the process. They are excited. When we return from break we will fill it with rocks & turn the machine on. While the machine does its work, we will be studying the inner workings of Earth, rocks, the rock cycle, erosion and weathering impact on our planet and more! So, come on back ! |
