If you know one child with Autism... well you know one. The variation in children and adults' seeing and responding to the world differently, is why Autism is often referred to as 'being on a spectrum'. In my experience this spectrum is a beautiful range of light of many hues and graduations. I have come to appreciate the often subtle differences between the children, while also noting their common traits and needs. The benefit of woking so long in a public school serving children with 'special needs' is the range of experience and developing positive relationships with families. This has deepened my understanding, informed my practice and inspired me. I have slowly added to my bag successful strategies and methods that help a child connect and communicate with others, increase self awareness, regulation & esteem while decreasing their anxiety. These strategies allow the children to better access the curriculum and learn. I have come to understand that anxiety and a general nervousness is the starting point for me to consider and address for each child. | 1) Structure and Routines. The more organized & structured the classroom paired with a calm consistent teaching style the better.
