What are the elements of a story? Setting, characters, plot , problem and a solution. Reading aloud two stories we filled out two GO charts to check if each story had the elements. Pumpkin Town and Too Many Pumpkins share many similar themes and problems. Each book had a problem about having too many pumpkins. However, the solutions were very different! We worked on comprehension by answering many WH- questions along the way which is typical for our daily read aloud. | On the third day we built a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the two books. Their attention to the details of the books & the two G.O. charts as a reference helped us and the students began making the comparisons quickly. They enjoyed this activity . Once the Venn Diagram was complete, the children were asked to write about the two stories. I asked that they draw their own venn diagrams & pick out a few items from the class diagram they could write or draw about. For the older students, I modeled how to write several sentences comparing and contrasting the two books. This activity will be repeated several more times so they can learn how to compare stories and write a compare/contrast response using a Venn G.O. chart. |
