This week we compared two popular characters from two children read alouds. This took a few days to complete as I broke it down into small steps. 1st, we filled in a T chart with each character's traits . We noted when they changed and what conditions created that change in character. They were then asked to develop their own Ven Diagram using the T chart to compare the differences and similarities between the two. . They noticed many similarities and did a good job explaining their thinking. We talked about how we knew a little bit about Scrooge's childhood history but not the Grinch's but realized both characters were sad and lonely. We talked about the choices these two characters made and how we are able to make choices. BULLY EXTENSION Because we had just completed a lesson on bullying, I asked if either character was a bully based on our working definition of what a bully was. ( see here ) . The class voted - Scrooge was the bully because he had been mean a long time. The Grinch was just mean and selfish. | |
