We began the monster tournament as you know in Oct working on addition with and without regrouping. Once Snowy our December elf arrived he challenged us to level to adding with or without regrouping using decimal points and money.. a BIG hit I might add. Now as we come to that end of our daily practice with repeated addition , drawing and reading arrays, singing and dancing to our skip counting (multiplication tables) we are ready for our multiplication and division tournaments. We began this last week but needed to review division. Screen shot of video counting by 4s.Sample song below but turn it UP! I suspect your child will stop if they hear it and start singing. | You can order a book to print lyrics as well as this DVD. |
DIVISION
We began with a simple but fun way to conceptually understand that sharing is division by reading the book titled, The Doorbell Rang. There were many groans and giggles as I read the book aloud slowly. The children were asked to make predictions, solve the math problem each page presented and draw the diagrams for each visitor which we were able to turn into a math equation. We then began working on cookie worksheets that eventually led to to some 'leftovers' . (Which are remainders actually and prepare the children for long division) Let the Tournaments Begin! | |
