Pumpkin Time

11/4/2017

The children were given differentiated  time task cards to complete around the room.   Some children practiced reading the clock to the hour and half hour while others solved elapsed time problems. Once completed and  based on their answers,  each student  was asked to shop for their pumpkin parts and  create their pumpkin.
These cheerful pumpkins brightened up room 24!
Enjoy.

It is Time Again

After building our block clock  ( here), we began our weekly practice  telling the time  by making our own clock for our math notebooks. With the basic clock  built we are now learning how to  use  our  class clock and student clocks to tell time to the   hour, half hour, 5 minutes and minutes!

They know when recess is coming ;-)

We also danced and shouted out the time with GoNoodle!

Counting by 5s and Time

9/3/2017

The children were asked to each snap  together   their own 5 cubes which we then  connected, skip counted by 5s & compared our own 'length' with the cube's length.   Day 1 we had 12 groups of 5 . Day two, we added 8 more groups to get 20 groups of 5.

After skip counting by 5s,  the children created the multiples of 5 cards and placed them accordingly along the linked cubes.  We also counted our groups of 5 which equaled 20. How could we write a number sentence to show how many total blocks we had linked together was the next task.  Several realized we could write a multiplication sentence instead of skip counting or adding.
Once we practice skip counting  for a few days with  the cubes, songs and videos (adding in some dancing),  we were ready for the clocks.  I  had them help me  turn  12  of groups of 5 into a clock.
We  began our weekly practice with our  own clocks.  There is a great deal of work ahead of us with  word problems involving elapsed time, telling time to the minute etc. This big visual the children created  will certainly be used often in the future!
