Calendar math includes a Wacky Place day. This is a large skill area that includes many standards in math and builds on a foundational knowledge of place value. We started the year and are now expanding on our work with a place value board that can build numbers as small as 0 all the way up to 1,000,000,000! Once we understood that numbers have a single digit place we learned how important zero the hero is in holding a place and making numbers BIG. ( Did you know he is our hero?) We have expanded this knowledge to comparing numbers, breaking them apart etc. We have been singing, snapping blocks together and building larger and larger numbers using a variety of visuals, songs and of course dancing. Now we are building towers to compare our single and multi digit numbers. Towers are a fun and easy way to SEE the comparison between numbers. Of course some numbers make HUGE towers so our number lines and 100 charts help. ( A place value App that builds numbers is coming soon!) We also learned how to compare large numbers by looking at specific digits within the larger numbers. And then there is that alligator video... | |
