The children have been involved in many hands on activities for our measurement unit. They have made rulers, measured items in the classroom, made Gallon Man, converted cups to gallons and more. We end this unit with Ratio Giants which ties in with our fairy tale unit and their interest in Jack and the Beanstalk. I began by reading aloud the book, Beanstalk the Measure of a Giant, which is about Ray and Jack. Both boys decide to become friends but their size differences require they solve some tricky ratios. Once this book was read and the understanding of a ratio between sizes was understood, the students started collecting their personal measurements ( height, length of foot etc) for each grade level. ( I have three grade levels in this class!) . This information was recorded on a grade level data sheet to be used for day two where they will calculate their average height per grade level and create a Giant that is double the average height! Going to be some tall giants in room 15 soon! | |
