Guiding two groups, one sitting and one on our yoga mats through a simple body scan , the children slowly settled and calmed. A body scan is a simple practice of 'taking a trip around our body' as we are still. I asked my students to close their eyes which can be difficult for some because their eyes dart around making coming still difficult. This is why we offered the wash rags to those on the mats. I guided them to pay attention to very specific parts of their bodies as we started at their feet and moved up slowly to their heads. For example, I ask them to notice and 'feel' their feet, their socks , the hardness of the ground if they were sitting and any other sensations. We then moved up to their knees, legs, back, belly, arms, hands etc. Some needed to wiggle or tighten so I would make that suggestion to notice what they felt once they were still again. We began and ended with three deep breathes and listening to the bell. We then listed our observations and talked about when it might be helpful to attend to our bodies like this. The students then added a body scan page to their digital notebooks. Many of my students struggle with anxiety, sleep, body & self awareness or calming themselves down. A body scan can help if practiced at home before bed for example. |
