Once we read the book and started our tree, a mini lesson was given to learn how to distinguish between a want and a need. The book was used as an illustration to show how we are changed by noticing the good. This happened to the tree in a very visual beautiful way. I reminded the children of the power of gratitude on the brain, thoughts and feelings. There is a great deal of research on going this area - but it is clear it takes practice and is a skill we develop over time. Basically a Harvard study said this about gratitude- 'Gratitude is a way for people to appreciate what they have instead of always reaching for something new in the hopes it will make them happier, or thinking they can't feel satisfied until every physical and material need is met. Gratitude helps people refocus on what they have instead of what they lack. And, although it may feel contrived at first, this mental state grows stronger with use and practice.' |
