We use Emwaves during our mindful lessons with the older students this year in small groups. I was awarded 6 emwaves for a class of 10-12. So we share and work in small groups. An Emwave is a personal handheld device that provides feedback in the form of visual or tones to indicate it the user is going green and is in a relaxed calm state. The children practice with this device and the older children can sit 12-15 minutes. We then share what we notice or any strategies to calm ourselves we used to stay green. Children will share that they followed their breath, did a body scan, thought of positive things, sent kind thoughts etc. to go and stay green.
Emwaves produce a few different tones to indicate your level of calm and integration. A single tone means you have stayed green for 5 seconds, triple tones occur for every minute in a zone. The blue ladder lights increase by a single bar as well. This provides the child visual and auditory feedback on how they are doing. The children calmly listen to all the pleasant tones while some peek or follow the light moving up and down slowly.
Many share specific strategies taught in class that they used to stay green. The most common comments are ' I can feel the room go calm.' 'It is a peaceful.' , 'I feel calm.' This time is clearly a confidence building time for the children as they learn to self regulate and feel, see & hear their efforts working.
Recently we have begun using calming apps during their Emwave time.
It is my hope to get an app that works with a Heart Math device where all children could use this technology as needed and not just in small groups of 5-6.
Here is an article in the Heart Math Magazine about our work in room 15.
EMWAVEs in the classroom.
Welcome to my classroom!
I am passionate, a little bit quirky ( some may say a little bit more) and dedicated to serving children with Autism. These young people have touched me deeply and have made me a better teacher & hopefully person. I want to share what I have learned that allows these beautiful children to grow & sometimes thrive in my class.
