In order for children ( and adults ) to become more self aware & regulated to use the strategies taught directly and practiced during Pirate Club, we need to learn ways to slow down, explore our inner world, impulses, body sensations/boundaries and thoughts. Learning to respond vs react is an important component to understanding of the many SEL and social concepts taught in Pirate Club. The Child Mind Institute is a wonderful resource and has been following the recent efforts to integrate Mindfulness, SEL and behavioral interventions. They write - ' In the last few years mindfulness has emerged as a way of treating children and adolescents with conditions ranging from ADHD to anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, depression and stress. And the benefits are proving to be tremendous.' This and more is observed consistently in room 15. Please read this article for understanding of this important area of practice and teaching to increase understanding of how room 15 is integrating SEL & Mindfulness which allows children to access not only the academics but also develop skills needed for a more meaningful life.
