We have been working on observations and how to use our senses to notice details as a scientist would.
For this experiment we wrote about what we already knew sank or floated. This was interesting as many had not made this observation or thought about this common occurrence.
Once they listed a few items, I brought out a bin of items and they made thumbs up/down predictions on whether the item I was holding would sink or float.
Once they observed these random items they were asked to make a prediction about their own pumpkins and why they predicted their pumpkin would either sink or float.
Then one by one the children observed the pumpkins as they were gently placed in the bin of water.
Finally a gourd was placed in the water and then two pumpkins of similar weight. The water level was carefully watched and recorded .
We talked about density, air and mass at this point.
