Methodology
Without the right opportunities, children may never learn what their strengths, interests and aptitudes could be. As a teacher, I could miss seeing them if I taught like I was taught or with more traditional methods or only focussed on academics. So, I strive to teach using methods that encourage, engage, create curiosity, foster independence, provide humor, fun and a little silliness. I aspire to keep the academics hands on, project based, challenging and interesting. The applicable standards are taught in a variety of interactive types of settings from 1:1, small group & whole group. The deliberate classroom design and modifications ease sensory overwhelm, reduce anxiety and incorporate student strengths. This allows me to follow the children's interests, talents and passions as well as my own when designing lessons or activities. I employ flexible deadlines and systems to provide a variety of ways for the children to demonstrate their learning. We become a community of learners with a focus on the whole child.
I am ever mindful of these unique learners and the thought process they display. I celebrate their unique abilities and teach with the whole child in mind not just the academics. If the children are not engaged, having fun, feeling safe, heard or accepted for who they are - the academics are not accessible to them.
