We have been spending time learning about gratitude, the difference between a want and a need, flexible thinking , unexpected/expected events, kind acts, think it or say it and compliments. Today we learned about showing appreciation even if we get a gift we do not want or like very much. What can we do if we get a gift we don't like? What should we say or do? Do we Think It or Say It? We began this lesson watching 2 clips from the movie Christmas Story. I was surprised that so many knew this movie and how eager they were to watch the Bunny PJ clip. We started with the clip about socks. In this clip the boys get socks, look at each other , frown and throw the socks over their shoulders. This was stopped and I asked whether the boys or for that matter the rest of the family tearing open their gifts, were showing any appreication? Words of thanks? Pausing to look at each gift? No, was the obvious answers. I asked if the children had ever gotten a gift they didn't appreciate? Only a few acknowledge this had happened to them. In the highly anticipated bunny slipper clip, Ralphie gets bright pink bunny footed PJs and is not happay at all. His mom makes him try them on. This clip was also stopped and discussed. | We then passed out their gifts of paper clips. Before they opened them I asked how each felt not knowing what was inside. Their curiosity, anticipation & excitement was evident. Their appreciation was genuine. I found out this group LOVES paper clips . Lesson fail but sweet none the less. The day ended with the students opening the gifts from the teachers. Few pictures were taken due to hugs, laughter and all around appreciation. Hope your winter break is also full of appreciation, laughter and hugs! |
