We have created our own personal people files. Next we need to learn how to pay close attention, ask questions, listen and think of others to build a file about another person we want to play with or get to know.
Structured repeated practice is important as our tendency to think only about ourselves and our interests ( One Sided Sid) and not be an active listener or wonder about others is strong!
So, this week we all practiced asking questions, maintaining a single topic and listening to each to build more knowledge about our classmates. Maintaining a conversation is tricky so the tree assists us by giving visual information. The tree ( teacher & students) keeps track of questions, answers, topic twisting, interrupting and off topic but related branches. This provides a visual to support our efforts.
Some groups did exceptionally well as they have been practicing with this tree. More scaffolding was needed for other groups. One Sided Sid, interrupting, topic twisting and not listening were areas of challenge and discussion as the younger students built the tree about a common topic ( favorite ice cream, animal, what each did after school etc.).
