After all the hard work the children were given several opportunities to share their Reindeer reports. This was the end of our Writer's Workshop process for one writing project. Well worth the time and effort. They were all so proud.
Most of the children have completed their reindeer research reports going through the sequential steps in a guided report writing series of lessons & the writing process. Their final draft is typed & published using the iPad app Book Creator . This work is then saved digitally on their iPads to share with the class and then printed in black and white for display and further reading.
We will be publishing ( sharing our work) next week. They are very excited and have worked hard for some time. These types of projects do take quite a bit of class time and effort. I am very proud of their efforts.
I saved a few in the PDF format below to give you an idea of how Book Creator looks in PDF format. But as such you can not click on the live research links, listen to their vocal recordings, sounds, see movies or animations and more that this app allows. This can be observed with apps that allow for epubs which we do have on the iPads . But you get a bit of an understanding of how book creator looks.
We have finished all the pre writing/reading work gathering, organizing & using a variety of resources to assist us as writers for our first research report of the year in class. Many are moving to writing in the Book Creator App on the iPads. Which we know assists them by typing which n reduces their frustration with legibility and paper and pencil tasks. . The app also allows for pictures, videos, diagraming and live links which makes for an interesting and more interactive report.
As we move into the actual writing of the report we needed another mini lesson on paragraph writing . So, the children completed a simple fact/supporting foldable to add to their writer's notebook. Then went back to work on their reports!
Using a variety of resources the children go though steps to help them gather facts needed to write their first formal research paper. This first research paper of the year was very structured and broken down into small steps and guided by the teacher. Step one was the KWL chart which was shred onto a large class G.O.
Next, I guided them through the first of several print materials they would be using for this project. This first resource was a mutli- page magazine type article.
1st, We carefully went over several articles and highlighted various text features ( titles, sub titles, photo captions, bold words etc) 2) We read the text aloud and then again silently to ourselves.
Sample page of their multi page packet.
3) We then used Edmodo and watched a video to learn more about Caribou & talked about the different types of resources availble to a researcher.
4) The children replied to a few questions after watching the video.
5) The children made their individual research folders to keep their articles, GO charts, notes etc. organized. Once this was complete they began re reading their resources and completing their personal GO chart.
6) As they complete their GO Chart and get them signed off, they can start working in the Book Creator app creating their research report. Whew! they are working hard.
We end the year getting ready to write our first report in January. We will begin with everyone learning about reindeer since it is December. High interest.
We began this unit learning the difference between factual statements and our opinions about our favorite food. We made several flap foldables for our writer's notebook.
This was interesting as the children were asked to also give facts or opinions about a favorite game. This brought up some strong emotions. So, we talked about how it was ok to share opinions that weren't like ours. Different opinions did not mean anyone was 'wrong' and that someone's different opinion could change ours. Where as facts could not really be changed easily or at all. We did talk about how at one time people believed the world was flat which demonstrated that some facts could change as we learn more.
Next, we began building our large G.O. bulletin board reindeer. We first read and highlighted specific text features in a magazine type article on reindeer. We then read it again and jotted down new learning and will compare this to our KWL chart when we return. ( KWL= what weKnow, Want to learn and Learned)
A talented artist in my class drew our reindeer that we began to label with physical features needed to survive and they will be reading about.
