Race to One GAME
Rolling two fraction dice while using the fraction bars children are asked to select a fraction to race to one whole or bust before the teacher. Once they understand the game and the use of the manipulative, we begin using to the Virtual Manipulative app where we can show our understanding .

Kid Multiplication Motivation
We started our daily tournaments between monsters using our multiplication skills. The children love this and always root for the monster they hope wins with the largest product.
So far we have had 10 tournaments and the children are getting faster and faster at solving the problems.
We are also learning skip count songs for each multiple using an amazing series of songs and scripts. The children are using two wonderful multiplication apps called Sushi Monster and Multiplication Math Matthews App on their iPads. Once a week we take a timed multiples test and they are improving. Although many need the multiplication chart . Those 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s!! Whew!
In small math groups, we continue to work on the multiplication algorithms and practice skip counting & solving problems using our multiplication skills.
We begin our fraction unit with several games, a song/video to begin learning vocabulary, the concept of what fractions represent & how they are related to division.
Below is a wonderful song created by group of students & teachers that is catchy and 'sticky' according to a student. ( Yes the kids were humming it all week). We hope to have it memorized by next week. It is a great help for some the important vocabulary terms.
We have begun our fraction exploration using pattern blocks.
We then played two games, Roll to One and Fraction Wars. This week they played against me. Next week, they will be playing with partners. We played Roll to One with traditional bars so they could see and feel the different sizes and relationships. On Day 2 we played the same game using an app with no pieces falling on the floor. ;-) (It is the small l things that make me happy ;-) Here are a few screen shots of those who rolled to one and beat the class and me .
The children were asked to complete this page to help them write their own song before they began their math and iPad movie project.
Once completed the children were then asked to graph their song and notice & share any mathematical pattern they saw in their gragh.
Once the math was done, the children had a variety of ways they could choose to complete their video. They could draw and make illustrations using paper pencil, camera roll or draw with a few apps on their iPads. They could also make their movie by choosing 1-3 apps. Several combined two or more apps.
By allowing the students to choose how they complete the project and showcase their work, gives them more ownership , increases motivation, interest & provides some responsibility for their work. It is also an expression of their learning preferences This level of independence and choice is a deepens their learning.
The 12 Days of Christmas was analyzed and graphed. Many recalled motions from a previous year. Naturally the many birds were noted ( We were studying birds for science and making them gifts. )
Once this was done the children created their own song using a simple GO chart and will be making a puppet show when we return.
The song needed to include who was giving the gifts ( best friend, pet etc.) , adjectives and follow the same numerical pattern.
They were very excited and as I took their gift ideas to fill out a model, I couldn't help but giggle. Here are a few of their ideas..
In ground pools, heavy solar panels, silver robots, pet birds, pink puppies, quiet days, Hokki chairs...
