Geometry is my personal favorite unit to teach as it naturally incorporates a great deal of hands on learning and art. However, it is full with tough vocabulary and abstract concepts not useful for elementary school students yet. But by using songs, reading books, hands on learning, building, art and labelling, the vocabulary and their meanings are better understood and remembered. There is also a WONDERFUL reading series I read aloud to them ( and some grab and read again on their own) . This set of nicely illustrated and fun books written by Cindy Neuschwander teaches the concepts and vocabulary in a memorable way. ( She has also written number sense , place value and fraction books!) I also taught them arm and body motions for key terms and then played Simon Says.. they are learning quickly! | Line song that included a few of our simple body motions for Simon Says. |
